Surprising Superheroes

The buzz talk for Marvels Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D was around how Joss Whedon plans to show viewers the resurrection of Agent Phil Coulson, as is the speculation on who is J. August Richards‘ character. The search for any theories on just who is the hooded hero may have gone past mild curiousty – so much so that I’m revealing my theory on Richard’s mysterious character to be the one and only Spider-Man Miles Morales.

If you’re shocked, mildly curious, or sweary on how I came to this theory, I would encourage you to read on – even if you don’t agree. If anything, I hope you’re mildly entertained on what exploring the identity of a superhero does to a fan psyche.

Let’s start with knocking Luke Cage off your possible list of contenders. In a recent interview with IGNJoss Whedon reveals that J. August Richards is not Luke Cage and what we should expect from Richards’ character. Whedon explains, “You know, he’s just a guy. I mean, the whole point of this show is, they’re just guys. They’re not The Avengers, they’re not the fancy ones. They’re the people that got sort of hit in the blowback of this super-world. So he’s kind of an everyman. He appears to be a very fierce everyman!”

So Whedon explaining that Richards’ character is ‘just a guy’ may be too generalized, and I’m not sure how much weight I’d put in him being ‘just a guy’ especially since we’ve seen this hooded hero display super abilities. So naturally fans will be thinking along the lines of him being not just an “average hero” as based off his abilities. With fans watching to see familiar Marvel super heroes pop up in the series Whedon says it won’t be like “an Easter egg hunt”.

“It’s not what the show is about. The show is about the six people who are in the show. And {every} week we’ll meet somebody that they have to deal with. Some of those people will be very sympathetic, some of them will be evil, some will be from the Marvel canon, some will reference it.”

Spider-Man Is Not Exclusive

Mentioning my Spider-Man theory to Marvel fans, I was surprised that many didn’t see the possibility of it happening, primarily due to lack of awareness on which studio owns the rights for Spider-Man. Sony or Marvel? Since many fans still believe that Sony owns the rights to Spider-Man they believed that Spider-Man won’t ever make it to television. This isn’t the case any more, as back in 2009 IGN revealed from Supervising Producer Greg Weisman (The Spectacular Spider-Man) that there in fact was a split between the movie and TV rights regarding Spider-Man.

Weisman explained, “Sony is NO LONGER involved with The Spectacular Spider-Man. I’m informed that Marvel can now produce the series, but of course, they don’t have to.” Weisman noted he had “no clue” as to what Sony gained regarding Spider-Man’s film rights that they didn’t already have that led them to give up the TV rights to the character.

So assuming that Marvel is able to use Spider-Man in television and not in the movies, I’m much more interested in the character Miles Morales as Spider-Man of Ultimate Comics. So yes, I’ll go on record that I believe J. August Richards will reveal himself as Miles Morales, even if he’s a guest star who may turn out to be reoccurring.

Why Miles Morales

J August Richards as Miles Morales J. August Richards Revealed as Spider Man Miles Morales?

The picture above shows a much younger version of the hooded hero but if we are going on the theory that Richards will reveal himself to be Miles Morales as Spider-Man and not just because he possesses similar abilities. I’m thinking that ‘hooded hero’ Miles is now all grown up; as an adult who has been part of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Quick Miles Morales background – Miles is very familiar to the world of S.H.I.E.L.D. he was introduced to Marvel’s Ultimate Comics as a 13 year old, since he revealed himself to Nick Fury while being interrogated during his captivity at Triskelion, the island headquarters of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Theory – In Marvel’s Ultimate Comics Spider-Man comic book there is a time jump from Miles teenage years to that of a young adult, and though it’s nothing along the lines of time travel, I wouldn’t be surprised if this could be Miles from an alternative universe. This theory stems also from how tight-lipped the executive producers and cast is on revealing the secrets of Agent Coulson and J. August Richards’ character. It might seem outrageous but I’m pretty resolute that not only will Miles Morales possibly be from another time but also the same time as Agent Phil Coulson – which totally explains how he was able to be supposedly ‘resurrected from the dead.’

“For years the truth was hidden. People from other times, other worlds, Heroes. but now we know. They are among us.”

The quotes above from the trailer do lend a helping nod in the direction in which I am formulating these theories. Even if you are working from the assumption that J. August Richards’ character has nothing to do with time travel/alternative universe, there are many variables in the trailer that lead me to believe he is still Miles Morales.

The Hooded Hero With The Young Boy

Hooded Hero and The Kid J. August Richards Revealed as Spider Man Miles Morales?

Miles and SH.I.E.L.D. background – If you look closely you can see the ‘hooded hero’ again in the background as the young boy is looking through a store window at an Avengers display. The significance of that shot leads me to believe that we may see one or all of these characters in the series. Not to mention in an issue of Ultimate Comics Spider-Man Miles woke up to be confronted by three Avengers - Hawkeye, Nick Fury and Tony Stark another connection with SH.I.E.L.D. – Or is this a trait of over thinking this theory.

Theory – We also see the ‘hooded hero’ trying to protect this young boy from a building explosion, a few moments before rescuing a lady. The follow up question is who is this young boy and what does he mean to him? Could this be his son, a relative, or maybe himself as a young boy in the past? The latter seems way off-base but stranger things have happened in the world of Marvel characters. Seems like a semi-plausible theory right? So what exact additional clues may have me thinking along the Miles theory?

Agent Coulson And The Hooded Hero Know Each Other

S.H.I.E.L.D. Hooded Hero J. August Richards Revealed as Spider Man Miles Morales?

In the trailer the ‘hooded hero’ leads Chloe to believe that he has no idea who S.H.I.E.L.D. is. In a later scene we see Agent Coulson talking with this ‘hooded hero’ and I’m pretty sure that these two are very familiar with each other. Level 7 may have taken an entirely new heights on top secret classified information like maybe the kind that has to do with the alternative universe.

Theory – Since I feel it’s quite possible that both Agent Coulson and the hooded hero are from another time, an alternate universe. I also love the idea that Agent Coulson is giving him one of those heroes/morality pep talks similar to Uncle Ben talk with Peter. “I’ve seen giants. The good ones aren’t heroes because of what they have. It’s because of what they do with it.”

Though Agent Coulson seems far removed from that of Peter Parker’s Uncle Ben, it’s the parallel meaning which seems to be delivered to the future superhero in the Marvel universe – namely, “With great power, comes great responsibility” which later became Parker’s philosophy.

An Advanced Web Shooter And Ability Controller

Theory – You may remember our Gadgets and Technology Revealed post. I’m hoping that the technology of S.H.I.E.L.D. could have created an advanced web shooter. Similar to the centipede or spider-like design gadget that is somehow physically attached to J. August Richards’ arm. With the hooded hero’s super human strength, I suspect it would come in very handy – especially if you’re rescuing a damsel in distress from a burning building. We don’t see any usage of this device in the trailer but Richard’s seems to have the superhuman abilities that have him leaping in a single bound. Similar to Miles ability “enabling him to be able to jump to a height of several stories in a single bound.”

Even though I mentioned the gadget device may be a web shooter I also believe that it could also act as some kind of device that helps keep his venom blast powers under control (It does look very futuristic, a possible nod to my alternative universe theory.) If you’re not familiar with this particular ability, the Venom Blast can stun and/or paralyze someone simply by Miles touching you with his hands.

Executive Producer Whatever Makes Cool Stories

Keeping in mind that according to executive producer Jeremy Bell, J. August Richards’ character is a guest star and that adding a superhero every week, “would be weird” and so again even though this series won’t be centered around the superheroes like Hulk and Captain America, they are open to everything. As Bell says, “Whatever makes cool stories.”

So after writing this article I mentioned this theory to one of the contributors and his first reaction was a “hell no!” Later he was managed to be swayed over to the possibility that my theory could be right, I was making a rather convincing case and it jogged his memory on a recent post with EP Jeremy Bell.

Are you ready for this?

If the above post still doesn’t help confirm the Miles Morales theory, check out the interview IGN had with executive producer Jeremy Bell.

IGN: And I’ve got to ask about J. August Richards…

Bell: Killed it! He’s so good. He’s so good, because we were looking for this character M– I almost said his name. It’s not the one people are talking about.

So is it just me but the letter M like in Mmmiles? (Haha)

Check out the theory round-up below. I hope it makes a cool enough theory to be true:

  • Hooded Hero is Miles Morales
  • Miles Morales is no longer the 13 year old boy in the comics but now an adult
  • Miles Morales may have come from an alternative universe. Hell, I might as well speculate that it could also explain Agent Phil Coulson’s return from his death in Avengers. Which may even set the entire possibility of my Miles Morales theory because in the E-Online interview LMB was debonked.
  • Miles in the comic worked for S.H.I.E.L.D. but we know he’s always battled that so he could be a retired ex-agent of S.H.I.E.L.D.
  • He could be related in some way to the young boy or possibly  his younger self
  • The gadget on his arm is a web shooter and/or an ability controller for his venom.

So what do you think about my theory of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. introducing Spider-Man as Miles Morales? Agree or disagree. Have any theories of your own? Sound off in the comments below.
